Why Ordering Heating Oil Now Is Good For Your Oil Storage Tank

Warm weather is on the way, so you’re probably not thinking all that much about scheduling a heating oil delivery – but maybe you should be, especially if your heating oil tank is less half full.

Here’s why: An empty steel heating oil tank is susceptible to developing a build-up of condensation (water) on its interior walls. That condensation creates two problems for your tank. First, bacteria – which already lives in your fuel – thrives in the presence of moisture; over time, bacteria will turn the oil in your tank into a thick sludge that will jam your fuel lines and potentially cause problems with your heating equipment.

Second, water on the sides of your tank will eventually drip and sink to the bottom of it (since water is heavier than oil), where it will corrode your tank and could even cause it to fail.

The takeaway here: Condensation inside your tank is bad, and one of the easiest way to reduce the likelihood of it forming is to keep your oil storage tank at least half full during the offseason. Filling your tank with oil now could be a good way to save some money, too, since heating oil prices are often at their lowest during periods of low demand for fuel.
