The first people of this region were the Lenni Lenape. In the late 17th century, French-Canadian fur trapper Pierre Bezallion became the first European-American to meet them in the Schuylkill River area that eventually became Spring City. The community became known as Pump Town for its public water pump. In 1867, it was chartered as Springville, but the name changed to Spring City in 1872 to avoid confusion with another “Springville” in Pennsylvania.
