Phoenixville, originally named Manavon, is located at the junction of French Creek and the Schuylkill River. It was first settled in 1732 and was incorporated as a borough in 1849.
It was a manufacturing boom town in the early 20th century, being home to the Phoenix Iron Works as well as a silk mill, boiler works, and factories that made matches, undergarments and hosiery. Etruscan majolica pottery, now very valuable, was also made in Phoenixville.
The catcher Mike Piazza, a Hall of Famer, played baseball for Phoenixville High School. His father, wealthy from used-car and real-estate businesses and passionate about baseball, asked the Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda, a childhood friend, to draft Piazza as a favor. That favor paid off big, as Piazza was the National League Rookie of the Year in 1993, the start of a long career.
Former Major Leaguers André Thornton and John Smiley also grew up in Phoenixville.
