“It is a really exciting time for oil heating customers,” said John Huber, president of NORA. “Prices are low and the oilheating industry is transitioning to a superior fuel product. By adding biodiesel, a renewable, carbon-neutral fuel to low-sulfur heating oil, heating oil retailers are actually delivering a better product at a significantly lower price. What could be better?”

Two prime movers forcing the drop in prices, according to NORA, are increased production and full inventory stocks. “With the U.S. now the world’s leading petroleum producer, production in 2014 showed a 34.6 percent increase over 2012 and the first seven month of 2015 show an increase of 11.5 percent over 2014,” the organization stated. “The combination of increased shipments from the Gulf Coast, higher refinery runs and imports have boosted East Coast distillate inventories to 5.4 million barrels above the five-year average for the week ending Sept. 11, the highest since 2011. On Sept. 18, the distillate inventory was at 59 million barrels.”

NORA stated that for the 8 million U.S. households that use heating oil, proper maintenance and tune-ups of their heating system can save from 5 to 10 percent in heating oil costs, while upgrading an older heating system to a new high-efficiency system may save 30 percent or more. Personally, when I reinsulated my house and installed new windows, I saved a ton in heating costs.

Did you know that most new digital thermostats require batteries? If your thermostat’s batteries die, your heater will not run! Take a look at your thermostat screen and if it is blinking or has gone blank, your thermostat likely requires new batteries. Install fresh batteries and save a repair call! Older thermostats used power from the heating appliance and did not have batteries, so be battery aware and keep your home in comfort all winter long.

Most heaters that fail haven’t been seen annually by a qualified HVAC company. It is important to have your heater looked at once per year from an efficiency and safety perspective. There are certain signs to look out for that indicate it’s time to consider replacing you heating and cooling equipment, or improving the performance of your overall system. • Every duct, wire or pipe that penetrates the walls, ceiling, or floor has the potential to waste energy. Seal them all with caulking or weather-stripping.
• Electric wall plugs and switches allow cold air in. By pre-cutting foam gaskets behind the switch plate you can effectively prevent leaks.
• Examine your house’s heating ducts for leaks. If there are any repair or replace them.

Check Your Home’s Insulation

• Ensure that your home is properly insulated. Begin by weather-stripping and insulating your attic hatch or door to prevent warm air from escaping out of the top of your house. In addition, seal holes in the attic that lead down into the house, such as open wall tops and duct, plumbing, or electrical runs.

• Replace your heater’s air filter monthly, and clean and remove any dust from vents or along baseboard heaters.

The steps to take to perform your annual tankless water heater maintenance are:

• Turn off the water heater.
• Turn off the incoming and outgoing water valves.
• Fill a bucket with a gallon of white vinegar.
• Connect a short length garden hose to the outgoing water valve.
• Place the tub of vinegar under the hose and valves, and then connect a garden hose to the incoming water valve.
• Connect the other end of the hose to a water pump.
• Place the submersible water pump into the tub of vinegar.
• Open the outgoing and incoming water valves, and turn the water pump on. Allow the tank to flush for 15 to 30 minutes. After you are done flushing vinegar through the tank, flush some clean water through it for a few minutes to make sure all of the vinegar is out.

• Check The Fan Belts On The Condenser and The Fan: These can easily be replaced, just do not tighten too much otherwise you can damage the shaft bearings.
• Replace or Clean the Filter at Least Once a Month: This is very important since the filter is what catches dust, pollens and other allergens, preventing them from entering your house. If the filter is clogged with dust and pet hair, it slows down the cold airflow, making the system run harder and longer costing you more money in the long run.
• Clean the Coils: You can obtain a commercial coil cleaner at any hardware store that you apply with a sprayer, following the manufacturer’s directions.
• Oil the Bearings: Put five to ten drops of light machine oil in each hole and rotate the shaft three or four times to make sure it is distributed properly.
• Examine the Condenser: Make sure the condenser is clear of leaves, debris, and vegetation, otherwise the air flow will be restricted.
• Insulate the Cool Line: This runs from the condenser to the compressor. Make sure it is insulated with snap on urethane or other high R-value insulation.
• Check the Temperature: Use two thermometers at the same time to measure the warm return air entering the evaporator coil and the coil discharge air entering the house. The difference between the two measurements should be at least 12F to 16F or greater. If a lower temperature difference is indicated, you should have the refrigerant checked by an HVAC professional.

Other steps to take in order to reduce your energy bill are to keep the windows closed in hot weather with the blinds tilted to block direct sunlight. Turn up your house thermostat as high as you comfortably can and open your windows at night to allow the cooler air to circulate in the house.

A Buderus solar thermal system for hot water consists of a solar collector, a pump station, and an indirect hot water storage tank. The solar collector, which is located on the roof, collects the sun’s energy and transfers the heat to the storage tank via the tanks internal heat exchanger. The storage tank in turn allows the hot water to be stored until it is used. The controller activates the system’s pump when there is enough solar energy to create hot water. Even on a cloudy day, light penetrates the cloud layer and heats up the solar collectors.

An existing Buderus wall hung or floor standing boiler can be combined into the solar system as a back-up for domestic hot water. The solar system can also complement the boiler for space heating by reducing the number of boiler starts, saving on costly fuel.
