- BTU's
- British
Thermal Units - amount of heat
removed from the air.
- Tonage
-
Term used to describe the cooling
capacity of central air conditioning
systems. 1 Ton of air conditioning =
approximately 12,000 BTU's
- CFM's
- Cubic
Feet per Minute of air - all
ductwork has a CFM rating for its size -
Approximately 400 CFM's of air movement
is needed per Ton of air conditioning.
- Condenser -
outside unit - It contains the compressor
and condenser coil, which discharges the
heat absorbed from the house.
- "A"
- Coil System -
The evaporator in an extended
"A" shape which is placed on
top of the existing warm air furnace,
using the existing furnace blower.
- "Attic"
System -
The Evaporator is part of an air handler
which also contains a blower. This system
is for homes that have no duct work -
(hot water or electric baseboard) - the
air handler and insulated duct work is
installed in the "attic".
- SEER - Seasonal
Energy Efficiency Ratio - a
government measurement of the efficiency
of the A/C system for energy use. Most
residential units installed are rated at
10 or 13. Example: 5 month cooling season
SEER 10 - $60/month average cost,
$300/Season
There is approximately a 10% increase in
efficiency for each SEER jump - A SEER 13
is about 30% more efficient so the cost
would run about $90 less for the same
house using a SEER 10 unit.
- Condensate
Pump -
small pump unit used to pump the
condensated water to the outside of the
home.
